Capsule Endoscopy

In Capsule Endoscopy the patient swallows a capsule the size of a large vitamin pill which contains a miniaturized camera and light source. The capsule naturally passes through the digestive tract over an eight hour period where it takes two pictures each second. The images are transmitted to data recorder worn around the waist by the patient.

Capsule endoscopy can be used in the diagnosis of conditions such as obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic abdominal pain, malabsorbtion and chronic diarrhoea.

This test will be available at the Princess Grace Hospital from December 2007.
